But if there is one thing the reality moms do best, it’s making the real moms look good! So for Mother’s Day, I want to share a few clips that always make me appreciate the woman who didn’t dress me up like a creepy doll and put me on TV. Thanks, Mom!!

While not an especially new technique, tilt-shift photography seems to be showing up more and more around the web. The technique involves manipulating the camera in such a way that life-sized locations and objects appear as miniature-scale models, and likely takes its name from the tilt-shift lens typically needed to produce the technique optically.

Besides just “looking cool,” tilt-shift photography can serve to change the way the audience perceives the image. Photographing very large scale events and landscapes with tilt-shift photography persuades the viewer to look deeper into the scope of the image. The eye almost can’t help but focus on all the tiny, intricate pieces. Pushing focus to these smaller components enhances the overall scale of the entire picture, something that may be overlooked in a normally shot photograph.

I recently watched a video, titled The City of Samba, that demonstrates this advantage better than any I had seen before. To create the video, filmmakers Keith Loutit and Jarbas Agnelli employed tilt-shift techniques to miniaturize Rio de Janeiro’s Carnival. Taking 167,978 photos during the five days of carnival, the duo found a fresh way to utilize tilt-shift techniques to their full advantage and make a big festival larger than life. I wonder how this use of tilt-shift might make its way into film and television in the future… after watching The City of Samba, I’m definitely a fan!

A coworker sent me a link to a Huffington Post article about the new 48 frames-per-second technology making its debut in Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit. For those of you who may not know, 24 frames-per-second has been the standard frame rate since the dawn of cinema. So this is really a pretty radical step. But judging from audiences’ reactions, it might be as short lived as the New Coke (of course, I was wrong about smart phones catching on, too, so there you go).

The problem with adding frames is that it makes the image seem much more fluid…which isn’t necessarily a good thing. Video cameras—at least until the advent of variable frame rate HD—shot almost exclusively at 30 frames, and we all know what the “video look” is. It’s, well, video-like. Good for soap operas, live sporting events, and YouTube videos. But movies? Not so much.

When you add frames—especially when you double them—you’re really tampering with that strobing, filmic look we’ve all come to equate with cinema. “Too clear” is how some people are describing the 48 FPS experience.

But hey, you have to admire Peter Jackson for pushing the envelope. Or being an unfortunate guinea pig—one of the two.

My life is television. I fall asleep to the TV, I wake up to the TV, I cook with the TV on and all day, I work in TV. On weekends, I turn every TV on to the same channel, so when cleaning around the house, I won’t miss a moment. My husband even works for DirecTV – so you can see how the boob tube has engulfed everything we do.

It was brought to my attention that April 30th is the first day of “Screen-Free Week”- an annual event where entire communities are encouraged to turn off their televisions and “turn on life.” Did you just blurt out a chuckle, like I did? I mean, what do-gooder dreamed-up such an absurd proposition? Well, it seems a group called TV-Free America did. In 1994, they launched TV-Turnoff week and in 2010, Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood (CCFC) changed it to Screen-Free week due to the variety of ways in which video can be viewed (phones, computers, iPads and more.)

I get it. It’s noble to step away from the glowing box. But weren’t we all raised, in large part, by our televisions? Isn’t it good for people to see other cultures and perspectives than their own? I realize it’s the excessive hours Americans are watching, but The Facts of Life, The Love Boat, School House Rock shaped who I am. The first time I saw an American Indian was in the early ‘70s Keep America Beautiful commercial. He stoically cried about the littered landscape and (even though it was discovered he was actually of Italian descent) as a kid, the message resonated with me. Who and where would I be today without hours of television? Certainly not partaking in a “Back In the ‘80s” Facebook quiz. The horror.

However for the sake of research, I’m going to give Screen-Free Week a shot to see what kind of grit I’m made of. You’d think I was auditioning for Survivor or something. I’ll give a full report and let you know if it became Screen-Free Hour, instead.

Someone blow out my torch – I’m already nauseous.

Some of my favorite documentaries air on the two most groundbreaking series in TV today – POV and Independent Lens, both broadcast on PBS. It’s where, each week, I and about 89 million other people get to watch some of the very best independent documentary films that America has to offer, like Alex Gibney’s Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room, Stephen Walker’s Young@Heart, Alan Berliner’s Nobody’s Business, and Mark Birnbaum and Jim Schermbeck’s Larry v. Lockney.

In fact, just recently, I watched a great film on Independent Lens called Being Elmo: A Puppeteer’s Journey that profiled Kevin Clash, the puppeteer who developed and performs the character of Elmo. According to Colorlines.com, Clash is, “One of the busiest African American actors working in television today, but very few people would recognize his face.”

While working for the legendary Jim Henson, Clash struggled to find a character that would stick until, while watching children in his mother’s home-based daycare center, he developed Elmo, a character full of love and kisses that embodies the essence of a child. Clash spent more than 20 years performing the most beloved Muppet and became the most requested character for sick children to see, but he regretted missing out on much of his own daughter’s childhood. “Making a puppet doesn’t hold a candle to making a human being,” he said. Clash’s story, combined with rare archival footage of Henson’s workshop and funeral, made the film a beautiful and bittersweet journey.

I’d like to say that you can also see this film, but both POV and Independent Lens are in jeopardy by the very system that purports to support them. The series have been bumped from their critical nationwide timeslot on Tuesday nights to Thursday nights when stations can broadcast any primetime program they want. That means that 349 public television stations don’t have to air these ground-breaking documentary series that tell the meaningful, sophisticated, and compelling stories that mainstream media rarely touches, and many have not, as evidenced by the 39% drop in ratings for Independent Lens this season. This does not bode well for the 25th season of POV, which is slated to begin in June. And it’s not a wise choice for the series that have garnered 13 Oscar nominations and 54 Emmys between the two of them. According to IndieWire, PBS has agreed to reconsider its decision after letters poured in from Kartemquin Films, Bill Moyers, the Center for Social Media, a Twitter campaign, and hundreds of disgruntled filmmakers.

I can only hope that PBS decides at its annual meeting in Denver on May 14-17 to program the two series in a slot that guarantees national, primetime carriage. Where else will 76+ million households, including the US Virgin Islands, Guam, and American Samoa, get to see the behind-the-scenes magic of the shop that created Elmo, a furry red monster who teaches millions of children how to be gentle, kind, and loving?

Want a good turnout at a company meeting? Don’t schedule it on Friday 13th (that’s this Friday!). According to the Stress Management Center and Phobia Institute in Asheville, North Carolina, an estimated 17 to 21 million people in the United States are affected by a fear of this day, making it the most feared day and date in history. Some people are so paralyzed by their fear that they avoid their normal routines in doing business, traveling or even getting out of bed. In fact, the organization estimates that $800 to 900 million is lost in business on this day.

But while some opt to stay home, others use this superstition to build franchises. Opening May 9, 1980, the original Friday the 13th film would go on to become an incredibly influential and profitable entertainment franchise. It now consists of 12 films (we’re still waiting for lucky 13!), novels, comic books, and collectibles. Plus, it carries one of the most recognizable film icons: Jason’s hockey mask. In 2006, IGN ranked Friday the 13th seventh in the top 25 film franchises. Judged by three senior editors, the editor-in-chief, and IGN’s entertainment editorial, the panel’s general consensus was that, even though the Halloween franchise started the slasher genre, Friday the 13th became one of “the most influential franchises of the 1980s.”

So how will this Friday affect you? Maybe you’ll remark about it on Facebook and drive a little more cautiously on your way to work. You may even counter with some good luck charms or you might forget what day it is altogether! But no matter what you do, just remember, there’s another Friday the 13th in July!

Last weekend, I explored Marfa, Texas. Like many smaller Texas cities, it looks like it has not changed in 50 years. That’s what makes these towns so much fun – they feel timeless and full of history. And while many know this small West Texas town as “the place with the strange lights in the sky,” Marfa also has a good bit of film history.

Marfa is well known for the movie Giant. Produced over 50 years ago, it remains one of the all-time classics. It stars Rock Hudson, Elizabeth Taylor and was the last movie to James Dean‘s short career.

The Hotel Paisano still looks as it did in the late 50′s, when the movie was made. And inside, they have a small room dedicated to the film. You can even rent the Rock Hudson or Elizabeth Taylor suite!

In recent years, locations in and around the town of Marfa were also used in the filming of There Will Be Blood, directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, and the Coen Brothers’ No Country for Old Men.

In addition to its film history, Marfa has also become a fairly well-known arts community with several galleries full of exhibits and installations, many of them permanent. You can tour the various works of one of Marfa’s most famous residents, Donald Judd, who took over an old Army base for his large scale art.

So next time you want to explore a bit of Texas, head to Marfa!

I have to admit – I’m a secret fan of many of the most wildly popular, guilty pleasure-inducing TV shows and novels.

So you can imagine how thrilled I was when The Hunger Games made it to the big screen. I’m even more thrilled to report this movie – along with the books before it – isn’t a guilty pleasure at all, but one that can be enjoyed shame-free!

Unlike so many book-to-movie adaptations, Director Gary Ross did the book justice and didn’t add any unnecessary frills. He made critics happy, viewers happy, and – with $248.5 million at the box office so far – the suits-in-charge happy.

Aside from the movie’s high quality, why has this franchise been so successful? For one, it relates to a much broader audience than its predecessors. It’s thought-provoking, exciting, politically hot and smart. Not to mention, it has a great actress for the character of Katniss in Jennifer Lawrence, and Woody Harrelson knocks it out of the park. With those qualities, every desirable demographic has been reached…explaining why this film is breaking records left and right.

I’ll be spending the rest of my day trying to figure out how to translate that success to reality television. May the odds be ever in my favor!
